Baucau Day Tour
Discover the history of Baucau
Service Description
Baucau is Timor-Leste’s second-largest city, located on the country’s northern coast. Set on a plateau with stunning ocean views, Baucau is known for its colonial charm, historical significance, and quiet beauty. During the Portuguese colonial era, Baucau was a key administrative and cultural center. Many of its old buildings, including the colonial-era market and the Pousada de Baucau (a former guesthouse), still stand today — offering a glimpse into its past. After the Portuguese left in 1975, Baucau, like much of the country, endured years of hardship during the Indonesian occupation. The town suffered damage but remained an important regional hub, known for its strong local identity and resistance. Since Timor-Leste’s independence in 2002, Baucau has been steadily rebuilding. It is now a peaceful town where history and local life come together, surrounded by natural beauty, from mountain backdrops to nearby beaches.
